Tiny Beautiful Things

Concept

The plot of Tiny Beautiful Things revolves around a woman writing an anonymous advice column from her home late at night. The director stressed naturalism as his main thought for the scenic design.

Because nearly all of the play takes place inside the mind of the columnist, Sugar, she needed to be able to have conversations with all of the “letter writers” as they came in and out of her life. I spent a lot of time working with the director to find places for the actors to spend time that felt natural, but still allowed for engaging story telling.

The subject matter of this show is comedic and heartfelt for the most part, but several very dark sections of the play reveal some dark truths about human nature. The director felt that the house needed to feel safe for the audience to experience this show. I made that wish visual by presenting the house in cool colors on the walls with white trim, a warm hardwood floor color and soft, neutral fabrics for the couches and chairs. The lovely lighting by Griffin DeWitt helped to achieve the look I had in my head and made it a beautiful place to spend time in.
